The shooting occurred on Sunday evening in the parking lot of a shopping centre in northeast Bend. The shooter then entered a Safeway and opened fire inside, killing two people and sending shoppers running for the doors. The shooter was also found dead inside the business by the police.
The shooting occurred on Sunday in a Safeway
At a late-night press conference, Police Chief Mike Krantz informed the media that they suspect the man approached the shopping centre parking lot from a neighbourhood behind it.
When police arrived, they discovered an AR-15-style rifle and shotgun “in close proximity to the shooter,” according to Krantz, who also added that they didn’t open fire.
According to a witness, there was a second shooter, but Krantz said there was “no proof of a second shooter anywhere in the area” after looking into the matter.
As a result of the “extremely vast crime scene” being investigated by around 100 officers from several agencies, according to Krantz, processing the scene will take some time, including securing search warrants.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, said Krantz. He assured them that they are “following up on every lead” and stated, “We recognise this is frightening for our community and something we would never want to happen in our city.”
According to Krantz, authorities are also looking into “material flying around social media” that is allegedly the gunman’s comments.
The police chief stated that there had been allegations of gunshots in other parts of the city. Officers who investigated those complaints discovered “no proof of other shootings in our neighbourhood.” According to him, police “discovered no evidence of a shooting” despite a complaint of bullets being fired near Southeast Ninth Street and Reed Market Road.
As we proceed with the investigation, “we ask the community to be patient,” said Krantz. If there is an emergency, call 911 and leave any leads. He added that he had just learnt of the one injured person and had no further information.
Just after 7 o’clock in the evening, officers and paramedics flocked to the Forum Shopping Center in response to many reports of gunfire, one or more victims, and/or suspects. The news conference that was live-streamed started just before midnight.
