Lizzo gave bodyshamers the ultimate rebuke in her speech at the 2022 VMAs

Lizzo may be seen dancing on TikTok in her own shapewear line, Yitty, when she isn’t winning Grammys and having one of the 2022 songs of summer. Lizzo’s brand is body positivity, but the “It would be lazy of me to simply state that I am body positive at this point, the About Damn Time singer told Vogue. It’s simple. I want to be a body-normative person. I want my body to be normal.”

Lizzo’s unashamed authenticity has helped her gain the confidence of admirers all across the world. Despite her progress, Lizzo has acknowledged that society still has a “far way to go” before plus-sized Black women worldwide are treated fairly (via Apple Music). Despite her success, Lizzo still faces body shamers and criticism. In an interview with Aries Spears for The Art of Dialogue, Lizzo was referred to as an artist creating “excellent music,” to which the comic replied,  “I can’t get past the fact that she looks like the sh*t emoji.” Spears doubled down saying. “She’s [got a] very pretty face, but she keeps showing her body off like, come on, man,” while comparing Lizzo to “a plate of mashed potatoes.”

Fans immediately criticised Aries Spears

Fans immediately criticised Aries Spears for his remarks about Lizzo’s body. While seated, he was exhaling heavily. Lizzo is in excellent performing condition. She simultaneously twerks, sings, dances, and plays an instrument.” In reality, Lizzo performed “About Damn Time” and “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” from her most recent album on the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards stage on Sunday night.

Lizzo not only dominated the opening number of the night with a breathtaking, body-hugging pink outfit. She also went on to win the Video for Good award for her hit song “About Damn Time”. After hearing about Spears’ body-shaming remarks, fans were expecting Lizzo to give one of her famous clap backs. However, the singer chose to use her time to urge award show attendees to use their votes in more significant elections.  “[Your vote] means everything to make a change in this country,” Lizzo said in her speech. “So, remember when you’re voting for your favorite artists, vote to change some of these laws that are oppressing us.” 

Lizzo briefly addressed the news before departing the stage, saying, “Now, to the b*****s that got something to say about me in the press … I’m not gonna say nothing.” Instead of clapping back, Lizzo just held up her award and said a definitive, “I’m winning.” That the most iconic non-clap back, clap back ever.
