Janet Yang had been chosen as president of Film Academy
The board of governors of the organisation announced that producer Janet Yang had been chosen president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It makes her the first Asian American to hold that position.
Janet Yang is the fourth female president
Yang, 66, the producer of “The Joy Luck Club” and “The People v. Larry Flynt,” takes over as the fourth female president of the Oscar-producing body. Yang was chosen by the 54-member board of the academy to succeed retiring president David Rubin, a seasoned casting director who is leaving after three years owing to term restrictions.
She is made to guide the academy
Yang will be tasked with guiding the academy through ongoing changes in the film industry and with stabilising the Academy Awards. Janet Yang will work alongside academy chief executive Bill Kramer, the former director of the Academy Museum who was appointed to the position in June.
Yang, is only the second person of colour to hold the position after Cheryl Boone Isaacs. The Asian Affinity Group of the academy is co-chaired by her.
Kramer said that, “Janet is a tremendously dedicated and strategic leader who has an incredible record of service at the academy. She has been instrumental in launching and elevating several academy initiatives on membership recruitment, governance, and equity, diversity, and inclusion.”
Will Smith hitting Chris Rock ruined the telecast
The Oscar telecast in March attracted more people than the one in 2021 after several years of dropping numbers. Will Smith hitting Chris Rock on stage ruined the telecast. Smith has since resigned from the academy. He has been prohibited from attending any academy-sponsored event for the ensuing ten years.
