A Spanish prosecutor is requesting 8 years of imprisonment for Shakira
Shakira might be facing a prison sentence soon! A Spanish prosecutor is requesting an eight-year prison term for the Hips Don’t Lie singer as punishment for allegedly cheating the Spanish government out of 14.5 million euros in tax money. Shakira will also be required to pay a fine of more than 23 million euros if found guilty (USD 23.5 million).
Shakira is accused of which offence?
Shakira is accused of not paying taxes from 2012 to 2014. The 45-year-old singer insists that she wasn’t a resident of Spain at that time. The prosecutor’s document further claimed that she lived in Spain often during that time. She allegedly purchased a residence in Barcelona in May 2012 for her, her ex-boyfriend, FC Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, and their 2013 Spanish-born son Milan. The former couple also had a son named Sasha born in 2015.
What singer’s representative had to say about the case?
According to Shakira’s lawyer, the singer is very confident of her innocence. She even considers this tax fraud case as a total violation of her fundamental rights. The Queen of Latin Pop claimed that she had already paid the 17.2 million euros that the Spanish tax office said she owed them while denying that she still owed any money to the tax authorities.
Shakira and Gerard Piqué announced their separation
The trial has not yet had a date set. Interesting enough, Shakira and Gerard Piqué announced their separation in June, a month after which her tax problems made headlines.
