Shooting at school in Russia leaves many people killed and injured

A shooter entered a school in central Russia and started firing, injuring 23 and killing 13 people before killing himself on Monday. A gunman who was “wrapped in Nazi symbols and a balaclava”.

The incident happened in School No. 88 in Izhevsk, an urban area in the Udmurtia region located 960 kilometres (600 miles) east of Moscow.

The shooter was identified by Russia Investigative Committee

The shooter was identified by Russia’s Investigative Committee as Artyom Kazantsev, 34, a graduate of the same institution. The committee also made public a brief video of the shooter’s body laying on a classroom floor surrounded by furniture that had been turned upside down. On the chest area of his black shirt, there appears to have been a red Swastika drawn in a circle.

Alexander Brechalov, the governor of Udmurtia, claimed that shooter committed suicide after the assault. He was listed as a patient at a mental health institute.

The number of deaths were unknown

The number of children and adults who died was unknown. Nine of the fatalities and 20 of the wounded, according to Brechalov, were minors. Earlier, the Committee reported that seven children and seven adults were killed and injured.

The words Columbine, Dylan, and Eric were cords attached to two pistols discovered close to the shooter’s body that were visible in pictures published by regional media. This is possibly a reference to the 1999 Columbine school shooting in Colorado, which saw Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris kill 13 people.

Peskov told reporters on Monday that,

“President Putin deeply mourns deaths of people and children in the school, where a terrorist act took place.”

Kazantsev, according to Russia’s National Guard, used two non-lethal firearms that were modified to shoot actual bullets. The authorities have no record of the guns. A criminal investigation into the incident has been opened due to allegations of serial homicide and unlawful firearm ownership.

Putin and other Russian authorities have used “denazification” as justification for the brutal war in Ukraine since it started in February.
