Zoe Saldana expresses her sorrow over Nichelle Nichols death

Zoe Saldana paid a tribute to Nichols

Zoe Saldana is heartbroken by the passing of veteran performer Nichelle Nichols. They both made their names as Lieutenant Uhura in “Star Trek.” A day after Nichols passed away, Saldana wrote a tribute for the pioneering actor.

Zoe Saldana posted on her Instagram

In an Instagram post on Monday, Saldana discussed Nichols impact as a Black woman in the entertainment industry, writing that “We have lost a true star – a unique artist who was ahead of her time always.”

“She`s an icon, an activist and most importantly an amazing woman — who blazed a trail that has shown so many how to see women of colour in a different light,” She wrote in her post.

Saldana discussed her first meeting with Nichols

Saldana also discussed her first encounter with Nichols after being cast as Uhura in the 2009 film. She called it a “really memorable moment” in her life. She even claimed that the actor provided her the self-assurance she required to take on the prestigious job.

Zoe Saldana further wrote, “Her energy was infectious every time I was in her presence. She convinced me in believing that anything was achievable if you put your heart into it”.

“I knew I had big shoes to fill when I was chosen to play Uhura, and Nichelle made me feel safe, told me to play her with all the confidence in the world. My hope is that we continue to keep her memory alive by celebrating her amazing body of work, and by spreading the message of peace and equality amongst all people. She lived a long, impactful life and not only prospered but helped so many others prosper too.”

Nichols portrayal of Uhura was incredibly significant

Nichols portrayed Nyota Uhura, the USS Enterprise’s communications officer, in the landmark science fiction series “Star Trek” from 1966 to 1969. Later, from 1979 and 1991, she appeared in six films in which she reprised the same character. Nichols portrayal of Uhura was incredibly significant. It made her one of the first Black women on American television to be portrayed in a position of authority. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously convinced the actor to continue working on the programme beyond the first season.

Zoe Saldana will reprise her role as Uhura

Saldana would play the character’s alternate universe counterpart in the 2009 “Star Trek” remake film and its two follow-ups from 2013 and 2016. Zoe Saldana will reportedly reprise her role as Uhura in a later instalment of the film franchise.
