James Cameron might direct till Avatar 6 and retire soon-after

James Cameron talked about his own future and the future of Avatar

Legendary director James Cameron recently gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter and revealed what lies in store for him as a director.

James Cameron Eyeing an Avatar 6

The ‘Titanic‘ director exclaimed that he has plans for making Avatar 6 and even an Avatar 7 in the future. Cameron released the first Avatar film in 2009 and reshaped the style of films by achieving a new pinnacle in 3D technology. It became the first film to be digitally shot and captured, earning Avatar the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2010.
The sequel Avatar 2 is set for release on December 16th, 2022.

Only A Handful of Movies Left For James Cameron

Cameron disclosed that he feels that he will direct another five or six films before calling it a day. Out of these few films, Cameron expects more than half of them to be Avatar sequels. But given the time and effort required to make Avatar films, the director joked that he has to find a successor soon. “Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required. I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this.” “I think eventually over time…I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know,” Cameron further added.

Will Only Make More Avatar Films If The Demand Is There

There is some ambiguity surrounding the future of Avatar films. Cameron admitted that majority of the filming for Avatar 3 has been completed while some portions of Avatar 4 have also been filmed. But he re-iterated that he would continue to make Avatar films only if there’s a positive performance at the box office. He evidently didn’t lose out on his cheeky humour since the first Avatar film as he shared a laugh over the fact that he’d probably be 89-years-old by the time Avatar 6 comes out.

Avatar: The Way of Water has a jam-packed cast comprising returning actors such as return of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña and Joel David Moore. Additionally, lead actor from Cameron’s Titanic, Kate Winslet is also a part of the cast.

Meanwhile, the tentative date of release for Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 is December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028 respectively.
