Jenna Ortega had COVID while filming iconic ‘Wednesday’ dance scene

Jenna Ortega has risen to stardom due to Netflix series Wednesday.

Netflix’s hit television series Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega has superseded all expectations. The newly released show amassed over 340 million viewers in its debut week itself. That is more than what Season 4 premiere of the popular Netflix series Stranger Things achieved.

The show’s second week figures were even more impressive. It roped in more than 411 million viewers. An all-time record for any English-language series on Netflix. It finds itself only behind Squid Games, Stranger Things and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in the list of records.

Iconic Dance Sequence Amplified The Success of Wednesday

One of the reasons behind the popularity of the show is a dance scene featuring lead actor Jenna Ortega. The young actress’s acting skills weren’t the only element that impressed audiences around the world. Ortega’s dancing stood out. Soon after its release, the dancing scene would go viral. The dance moves would pop up on practically every alternate TikTok and Instagram Reel. The song “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps has also risen in popularity due to the dance sequence.

Jenna Ortega Battled COVID And Danced Her Way Through

In an interview with NME, Jenna Ortega revealed that she actually had COVID while filming the dance sequence. On the day of the shoot, she woke up with COVID related cold symptoms. Ortega said, “I woke up and it’s weird, I never get sick, and when I do, it’s not very bad.” She proceeded to describe the day of filming as awful.

Jenna Ortega took a COVID test due to symptoms as well. But till the test results came back, filming of the dance sequence continued. It was reportedly so painfully bad that Ortega was administered medicines in-between takes. When the test results came back negative, Ortega was removed from the set.

The You actress reportedly wanted to re-shoot the scene after her recovery as she felt that she could do much better. She stated, “I think I probably could have done it a bit better.” But there was no time for the re-shoot. The 20-year-old actress isn’t a dancer but choreographed the dance sequences herself. Whatever she did seems to have struck a chord with the audience.
