Actress Angela Lansbury passed away on Tuesday at the age of 96, her family announced. Additionally, her career spanned eight decades and she created unforgettable portraits of a diverse range of characters in movies, on stage, and on television, from villainesses to sleuths and light comedic roles.

Accordingly to a statement from her daughters, Angela, who portrayed a crime-solving mystery writer in the venerable US television series Murder, She Wrote, “died peacefully in her sleep” at home in Los Angeles. Also the announcement stated that the actor was only five days away from her 97th birthday.

Angela Lansbury Career

A member of the acting aristocracy in three nation Britain, where she was born; America. Also where she lived for the majority of her life; and Ireland, where she maintained a home for many years Dame Angela Lansbury enjoyed a career spanning three quarters of a century and garnered high praise and awards in theatre, film, and television.

After a string of low-budget films and maternity leave, Angela’s career was revitalised in 1957 when she co-starred with Burt Lahr in Hotel Paradiso on Broadway.

Before appearing in movies like Death on the Nile (1978), The Lady Vanishes (1979), The Mirror Crack’d (1980), in which she played Agatha Christie’s spinster sleuth Miss Marple, and the film musical The Pirates of Penzance, Angela also acted on stage in England (1983).

Angela Lansbury Acting Life

When she was a teenager, Angela made her acting debut as a cunning Cockney maid in Gaslight. Later, as the tragic Sibyl in The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1945, and as Laurence Harvey’s evil, cunning mother in The Manchurian Candidate in 1962, she gave riveting supporting performances. 

She majored in drama, and her movie career took off right away. Therefore, her first three films, Gaslight, National Velvet, in which she portrayed Elizabeth Taylor’s elder sister, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, were produced under an MGM contract.

Despite waiting until her 40s to make her Broadway musical debut, she also managed to have a long career in theatre. Generally, she worked frequently with her near-contemporary Stephen Sondheim, the legendary Broadway writer of the time, and rose to become one of the first women of American musical theatre.

When she returned to acting, she received praise for her roles as Robert Preston’s friend in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960), as Elvis Presley’s mother in Blue Hawaii (1961), and as Warren Beatty’s mother in All Fall Down (1961). (1962).

Angela Awards 

In November 2013, she received an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement at the age of 88, nearly seven decades after the release of her first film. Also, Geoffrey Rush and Emma Thompson, who both won Academy Awards, paid homage to Lansbury at the event.

As the original Mame and Gypsy on Broadway, Angela earned five Tony Awards. Mama Rose, Rose Lee’s mother in Gypsy, Sweeney Todd’s meat pie baker, Dear World’s Countess Aurelia, and Blithe Spirit’s medium Madame Arcati.

After all, she appeared on Broadway, on the London West End well into her tenth decade, winning five Tony Awards. Also, she received Academy Award nominations for best of her roles.

Angela, who was born in London in 1925, emigrated to the United States in 1940 with her mother, Moyna McGill, who had roles in Hollywood productions.

Richard Cromwell, an actor who lived in Los Angeles, and Angela’s marriage lasted less than a year. She wed Peter Shaw in 1949, who served as her manager and the father of her children, Anthony and Deirdre. Peter passed in 2003 .
